Description
Ghost-Buster Column 2 was developed to reduce the incidence of ghost peaks during HPLC/UHPLC analysis. They are available in 4.0 x 50 mm and 3.0 x 50 mm sizes.
As time goes by detectors and columns become more sensitive. During HPLC/UPLC analysis, especially in gradient elution or after long term usage of the system, some unexpected peaks, which are usually called “Ghost-Peaks” may appear in the chromatogram. The commonly used Ghost Buster Column can capture ghost peaks. Unfortunately, they are often accompanied by the fluctuation of the baseline in gradient elution. That may affect the integral chromatographic peaks. Ghost Buster Column 2 was developed the eliminate baseline fluctuation.

More Stable baseline
When the initial proportion of the aqueous phase is high (more than 95%), using the conventional Ghost Buster Column can remove impurity effectively. However, some ghost peaks still occur when the proportion of the mobile phase has a drastic change in a few minutes or the baseline has a large fluctuation. By further improving the overall design of the Ghost Buster Column 2 the mobile phase is fully mixed before entering the column. This reduces baseline fluctuation substantially and drifts in the initial operation of the gradient program.
From the above case, it can be seen that Ghost Buster Column 2 3.0 x 50 mm is perfectly compatible with the high proportion of the aqueous phase. It also shortens the running time in the gradient program with a more stable baseline.
Precautions
- For new Ghost Buster Column 2 it must be flushed with 80% Methanol and 20% water at 1 ml/min for 4 to 5 hours
- Not all impurities can be adsorbed by the Ghost Buster Column 2
- Ion pair solvents in the mobile phase would be adsorbed by the Ghost Buster Column 2 and affect retention and peak shape. Whether or not this type of mobile phase can be used has to be determined by the specialists
- It is recommended to replace the column when it starts to lose its performance
